Darby, John Nelson

Darby, John Nelson
(1800-1882)
Founder of the Darbyites. Born in London, educated at Westminster School and at Trinity College, Dublin, he graduated in 1819 as gold medalist. He tried law and the Church but resigned because of dissatisfaction with the Anglican establishment. He and like-minded friends, meeting in Plymouth, formed the Plymouth Brethren in 1831. Darby trav94 eled worldwide "spreading the word." In 1834 the group commenced a magazine called The Christian Witness. Today's fundamentalist churches owe much to his doctrines. He was a prolific writer and the Darby Bible is a translation by him. Some of his hymns: "And is it So," "Hark! Ten Thousand Voices Crying," "Lord, Thy Love's Unbounded," "Rest of the Saints Above," "Rise, My Soul, Thy God Directs Thee," "This World is a Wilderness Wide," "Though Faint, Yet Pursuing, We Go on Our Way."
